The Importance Of Rubber Gaskets For Aircraft Applications

By Judy Sullivan

A gasket is a tool that is so often used that people don't even think much about its importance in daily life, yet these little things are found in many locations. They are used everywhere to protect homes, vehicles and they play a key role in the construction of airplanes and even spacecraft. When you want to know how gaskets work and and what types are used in rubber gaskets for aircraft, here are facts that offer more information about the products and their benefits.

In order to protect pipes and electronic wiring, seals made of gasket materials is a frequent choice. When the environmental conditions are bad, protection is often in the form of seals. Some of the conditions that can be mitigated by using seals include high humidity and very wet weather. Extremes in heat or cold is other environmental problems where a gasket can provide protection.

The main purpose of a gasket is to keep the environment on either side of the gasket separate and apart from each other, therefore the most important element in a gasket is its construction and its installation in order to prevent any leakage. When used in aircraft, it must be highly resistant to pressure and to extra high or low temperature. The seals are used with a similarly high quality of adhesives.

There have been many materials used over the years to attempt to create a gasket that works. Examples are wood and cork. Unfortunately most do not provide an effective long term barrier against leakage. Metals are another example of a material which may cause as many leakage problems as it solves. Most products today are made of synthetics, including synthetic rubber, polyurethane, silicone or ethylene propylene.

Gaskets are constantly proving that they are among the most effective seals to use, especially when it comes to vehicles. Thanks to their high resistance to temperature changes and their flexibility which helps them to keep tight even when there is constant pulling and pushing effects on the rubber and synthetic products are manufactured in the largest number. This style is called compression fit.

Although the label may be defined as "rubber gasket", in fact most products consist of more than one substance. Usually additional materials are added to the basic compound. This practice makes the product more durable and effective in performance.

Aircraft installations require quality sealing. Sealing spots of particular significance include the body of the plane, the engines and all extreme temperature places, by the doors, the windows and by the hatch as well.

Some of the major types of seals include digraph, bellows, glade, tadpole, bulb and lip. Each one of these holds in a manner suited to the purpose for which it was designed. Identifying the right product for the need requires attention to detail.

The quality of rubber gaskets for aircraft is really a question of life and death. Being able to depend upon the sealing power of a gasket is a key element in many safety and health locations. Therefore it is essential to go for the best quality gasket brands.
