Thoughts About The Global Shift Toward Using Green Plumbing Products

By Charlotte McBride

Time was not that long ago most plumbers found pride on the ability to connect cast pipe with oak blocks and hot poured lead. Though this is only one of several examples that are possible, many old methods are not in use anymore. This is attributed to a global shift to using green plumbing products. Most people feel these products will cost more and not last under use. Nothing could be farther from the truth. They are much better for our planet as well as their being cost effective.

These items typically provide two useful properties. They provide efficient energy use and greater water conservation. These factors are critical to providing a positive future outlook for our planet. Anybody has only to drive down to the local home improvement outlet to see the large amount of environmentally friendly fixtures there for residential use. The best part though is they will over time save your hard earned money.

Water conservation is quickly becoming a hot topic around the world. With the supply of drinking water shrinking every day steps are needed to extend its longevity. The cost of treating waste water is also rising expediently due to the increased use of chemicals. Consumers and businesses alike are looking for ways to make their dollars go further.

As little as 10 years ago most toilets used 5 gallon water tanks for flushing. The average cost of municipally water in the US is 38 cents a gallon. That is almost 2 dollars a flush going down the drain. Flushed once a day over a year that is almost 700 dollars. Just to flush your toilet. That is why modern super efficient toilets are made that can be flushed using only one quart of water.

Point of use or tank less heaters are another new innovation towards a greener tomorrow. Instead of heating up water in the holding tank, they can provide for hot water only when there is a need. These new systems are shown to be as high as 95% efficient over older style heaters and many people tend to use less water because it is immediately hot.

Rainwater harvesting is also becoming a viable means to decrease overall costs for uses like landscaping, bathing and washing clothes. While they are not typically meant for potable water use, they can dramatically decrease a family's use of water. This helps reduce the burden of use on municipal facilitates and also is good for our environment.

Solar anything is becoming much more prevalent also. Basically, solar anything is very good. Whether you use it to heat up water, or tie it with pex for heating your home. It has a somewhat higher initial cost, though generally will pay for itself in a few years. Combine this with the many tax credits and they are very difficult to beat.

In the last decade there has been a much greater shift for using green plumbing products. More reusable plastics are now being used over cast iron or galvanized pipe. Pex piping systems are being widely used over copper. From the way things look now, they are going to get even better in near future.
