Virginia Free Divorce Records

The state of Virginia implements the Freedom of Information Act which allows its residents to request for a copy of their personal files whenever they need it. One of the documents that is available for public access which is considered as a popular document in the state are the divorce records in Virginia.

Such document is requested by the residents of Virginia for several reasons. The document is needed when dealing with government transactions. The document is used as proof of identity and status in processing insurance or any financial related concerns. Genealogy is another reason for requesting a copy of a divorce certificate. It may not be as important as other documents but it can cause major problems for later generations if the divorce is not updated regularly.

AS the name suggest, a divorce certificate would contain information about the separation of a couple who resides in the state of Virginia. One would know their names along with the date and the place where the separation was made legal. Unfortunately, not all details about the separation are made public. Information such as the reason why the couple separated is disclosed from the public as well as any agreement that the couple has made. This includes the custody of the children and the division of the couple's properties and assets. These are made confidential to respect the privacy of the involved individuals.

Virginia divorce records are only made open to the public if the separation has reached its 50th anniversary. The state has managed to keep files from 1853. One has to pay $12 in order to get a copy of the said document. To get access to the document, it is important that the requesting individual knows the basic details of the divorce as it is needed in the application form. Also, one has to be ready to provide their contact details in the request form since it will be used as reference because the government of Virginia, allows individuals to request for their personal divorce certificate.

All of the public documents of Virginia, including the divorce certificates of the residents, are being archived at the Vital Records Section of the Department of Health. In times where the requested divorce file is not available at the state office, it can be requested at the county clerk office where the divorce was filed and legalized. One can also send the request via mail but the results of the search can be delivered only after a few days since it was filed or even longer if there are problems encountered during the search because of missing information or requirement.

Getting a copy of a divorce record in Virginia may be tedious and can eat up your time especially if you do not know where to look. Now, the Internet is being utilized to deliver information to the people, thus allowing the residents of the state to request for divorce certificates easily and faster than any other method. One can even get a free divorce records online if you know how to look. However, many still go for the paid option to ensure the quality of the results they obtain from the search.
